The state of Michigan has more than fifty-five organizations run by peers who have suffered from a mental illness during at least part of their lives. This is the largest network of independent peer-run organizations in the nation. It is proven that having these organizations 100% run by peers is the most effective model. Adding non-peers to the board or management dilutes the true meaning of peer-run as even just one non-peer or professional can begin to tip the scales away from what the peers want out of their organization.
If you are interested in starting a peer-run organization or are running your own peer-run organization, JIMHO Project DOORS would be more than happy to assist. Feel free to contact JIMHO at any time for further information.
